Volkswagen R

Motorsport in the genes.

Volkswagen R has been involved in motor sports for years – with impressive results. When it was introduced, the “R” stood for “racing”, but since then it has established itself as a label for outstanding performance vehicles and, as a brand for high performance series production vehicles, is now an integral part of the Volkswagen family.

The involvement of Volkswagen R is; above all; aimed at the active enhancement and transfer of innovative technologies. With experience in international race series and the pinnacle of rally sport – the World Rally Championship – Volkswagen R has succeeded in putting motor sports on the road. In 2018, Volkswagen R is once again part of rally sport and a partner of the PSRX Volkswagen Sweden team in the FIA World Rallycross Championship. A vision of and symbol for the intensive collaboration between Volkswagen R and Volkswagen Motorsport is the I.D. R Pikes Peak: an all-wheel drive electric sports car, which competed in the world’s most legendary mountain race on 24 June 2018.

Pikes Peak International Hills Climb

„Race to the Clouds.“

Key date, 24 June 2018 – one goal: Break the record for electric racing cars

Volkswagen and the fully-electric I.D. R Pikes Peak have made history at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Driving the 500-kW (680 PS) I.D. R Pikes Peak, Romain Dumas (F) defeated a field including cars with conventional drivetrain technology. In doing so, he not only broke the previous record for electric vehicles, but also bettered Sébastien Loeb’s (F) all-time record from 2013 – by a full 16 seconds. Dumas’ new record of 7m 57.148s minutes is now top of the list of Pikes Peak champions, which includes such acclaimed drivers as Loeb, Walter Röhrl (D), Michèle Mouton (F), Stig Blomqvist (S), Nobuhiro Tajima (J) and also Rod Millen and his son Rhys (both NZ).

“The I.D. R Pikes Peak is the sporty forerunner of Volkswagen’s fully-electric I.D. family. Today, we saw what this technology is capable of,” said Dr. Frank Welsch, Member of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand “Technical Development”. “Every Volkswagen employee can be extremely proud of today’s result. I congratulate the team from the bottom of my heart. With a combination of outstanding engineering skill, passion and commitment, the team has managed to create a fantastic racing car in just eight months. The Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak has now set the fastest time in the history of this hill climb, which spans more than 100 years – that speaks volumes for electric mobility.”

Test programme.

It is one of the peculiar challenges on Pikes Peak: Testing on the 19.99-kilometre route of the hill climb in Colorado Springs is only very limited, and only possible on certain sections. For this reason, the bulk of the testing is not done on the actual route, but at racetracks.

FIA World Rallycross Championship

The World Rallycross Championship is a real thrill for racing spectators! Because unlike in the World Rally Championship, all rallycross events are held in a circuit, putting the fans within spitting distance of the action. And there’s certainly plenty of that in this up-and-coming sports discipline, as the entrants are pitted directly against each other, rather than against the clock. And when these racing cars with up to 570 hp really go for it, the earth can really move. The races can be held on various surfaces, such as gravel, asphalt or a combination of the two.
